MARKUS NICK
WEST CANADA & THE CANADIAN ROCKIES

After asking in the hostel (or "Lake Louise Alpine Center"), I decided to change my plans: A scramble to Tower of Babel instead of Larch Valley (and the Moraine Grizzly that was sneaking around there).

But first, I went onto Moraine Lake Rockpile to take the mandatory picture of the 20-dollar view on Moraine Lake (Moraine Lake was on the back of the former Canadian 20-dollar note). The mountains in the back are some of the 10 Wenkchemna Peaks.

Tower of Babel is the first peak on the left-hand side of Moraine Lake (1650m). The trail starts from the Consolidation Lakes Trail [5]. All the way up, you have to struggle with the loose gravel. At the end of the gully filled with gravel, I reached a saddle. From the saddle, it is just a few steps to the top (90min, 2360m).

You could call the summit also stone plate beach: It was covered with flat rocks and very warm. I really got a good, scenic view on everything that is around: Moraine Lake, the Consolidation Lakes, and also the view to the north.

So, I took a sun bath, relaxed, and enjoyed the sight and doing nothing. Well, after 90min of relaxing, I got pretty bored. I thought about going up to the 2nd peak over the ridge, but the rocks looked relatively instable. So, I decided to return.

Since it quite early when I was back at Moraine Lake (1.50pm), I decided to drive to Bow Lake and hike to Helen's Lake and maybe to the Dolomite Pass. The hike was very easy. I turned around on top of the ridge behind Helen's Lake (after 90min). The pass did not look very exciting from the ridge and, thus, the thought of a decent steak won. I went straight back from the ridge to the parking lot (90min).
